What happens when a family-owned store takes a fresh design approach to improve the retail experience? South India Shopping Mall newest store is located at Bangalore’s Whitefield Road. It features a mix of local and global design elements.
South India Shopping Mall, a favourite brand in South India with 18 stores in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, has a refreshed design ID for its Whitefield store in Bangalore.
Saran Associates’ design direction is an Indian accent. The idea behind Saran Associates’ design direction is to keep the Indian-ness of the company as the central theme. It was also about making an old design concept modern and functional. Dense SKUs, like traditional retail, presented a challenge in maintaining functionality and aesthetics. Although the space needed to adapt with modern times, it couldn’t be lost the nostalgic appeal of an old brand.
The experience must begin before you even enter the space. The magnificent facade leads to the luxury retail space, which is equally distributed over three floors. The company’s logo and their pattern were used as inspiration. The facade’s character is enhanced by the use of printed lacquered glasses. The window display gives users a glimpse into the future by breaking the monotony.
Ground floor houses premium pattu sarees as well as sarees. It also houses the cash, billing, and delivery counter. Delivery is usually separated from cash/billing in these store formats to allow for better control. For both counters and wall modules, 3D jalliwork has been created from metal in an antique gold finish. The ground floor is richly layered with wooden mouldings for the furniture and wall modules. Accentuating the atmosphere of the whole section is the use of Tanjore paintings, and traditional-carved Chettinad pillars (sourced in Karaikudi), called “Yali”.
The first level features women’s merchandise that includes Indian and western wear segments. The floor features a similar design language, while CNC-cut counters for premium lehengas break up the monotony. This floor features a tile pattern inspired by Indian culture, while rose gold fixtures add a contemporary touch to the design.
The second level is for menswear. There is a conscious shift in design, colour scheme and layout to accommodate the changing mood and merchandise. The floor is dominated by a white oak wooden ceiling with a good accent pendant at the hot spot. Black powder-coated frames and fixtures are used in the South India Shopping Mall causal zone, while copper fixtures and wooden mouldings are used in the ethnic zone.
The third floor is designed for children and features a simple white scheme with a few pops of colour. This creates a fun atmosphere.
